Hi, my name is Mark Thomas, and for the last 40 years I have been a below the elbow amputee. I have worked full time in the medical field, construction and welding, and have worn a mechanical prosthesis with a traditional figure 8 shoulder harness system.
The traditional harness system gives the feeling of confinement, lacks range of motion, and is overall uncomfortable to wear over and under a shirt. When opening the hook it requires more physical upper body movement and strength, thus creating lifelong shoulder problems.
Through rigorous testing and development, I have created a new system that does not require any traditional shoulder harness. I now have full range of motion, zero feeling of confinement, and most importantly, it’s comfortable to wear. I can now open the hook by just extending my elbow.
The Thomas Below the Elbow Arm has bilateral upper and lower pivot arms. The lower pivot arm attaches to the prosthetic socket and the upper pivot arm attaches to a semi solid Velcro closure cuff. The hook opens by means of a loop system cable attached to the upper pivot arms. This in turn attaches to the hook and by simple elbow extension and retraction, the hook opens and closes.
I have also created a smaller version for women and children giving every person with a below the elbow amputation the chance to feel confident and comfortable.
